RNN Architects was included in the SynEnergy team that was selected to develop construction drawings for a complete mechanical and electrical engineering re-design of Building #42 for replacement of a de-aerator tank, which provides feedwater to multiple steam boilers in the Central Utility Plant on the NIST campus in Boulder, Colorado. The complexity of the project included dismantling and replacing a curtain wall for equipment installation. The concrete floor and roof of the building also required complete reconfiguration for proper anchoring and roof penetrations. Challenges included sustaining the steam system operation on campus during the work period, management of disruptive and noisy work operations during work hours, and coordination of construction processes for delivering and installing the equipment by way of crane operations. Key actions included advance review and correction of existing, as-built architectural and mechanical system drawings, advising on curtain wall disassembly, storage, and reassembly in accordance with the work progress, and complex reattachment of steam, electrical, and interior features and finishes.
